Hormone therapy replaces estrogen, usually with a progestogen if you still have a uterus, at the lowest dose that controls your symptoms. Your clinician reviews the balance of benefit and risk for you specifically, because it genuinely differs from person to person.

- Known, suspected, or past history of breast cancer
- Known or suspected estrogen- or progesterone-dependent cancer
- Undiagnosed abnormal vaginal bleeding
- Active or prior deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism
- Active or recent stroke or heart attack
- Known liver impairment or disease
- Known clotting disorder such as protein C, protein S, or antithrombin deficiency
- Known or suspected pregnancy
- Migraine, particularly migraine with aura
- High triglycerides
- Gallbladder disease
